Fundamentals of Tango, Level 1A

  • Gainesville Tango Exchange 720 NW 23d Avenue Gainesville, FL 32609 United States (map)

This 8-week Level 1A course will focus on foundations of social tango including embrace, connection, and walking. We will learn several common social figures, including variations and musicality. Each class is 1 hour, followed by a practice session.

The course runs from January 21st through March 11th. Classes are held at Rena's Ballroom at 720 NW 23rd Avenue.

You must complete both Level 1a and 1b, in any order, before moving to Level 2. Level 1a and 1b are rotating courses that are complementary to one another and can be taken in any order, but both must be completed before moving to Level 2. This program is open to those brand new to Tango and also to the experienced Tango dancer who wants to improve and polish their dance.

Course fee is $120 for 8 weeks and includes the practica.

College students' fee is $80 for 8 weeks and includes the practica.

The program is progressive and so you must start no later than week 2 of the course (by Monday January 28th).

Refund Policy: Should you find yourself unable to attend after you have registered, you can be refunded up to the second week of class (Monday January 28th), minus $15 for any class you have already attended. After that, your registration is not-refundable, but could be applied to a future course session.

What should I expect at the classes?

-Social Argentine Tango. If you are wanting to dance international ballroom, North American, Fantasia, or other styles, this is probably not the school for you. Although we don’t focus on any one specific style of Argentine tango, we work mostly with Milonguero and Salon styles. We typically dance in close embrace, but ultimately the embrace is negotiated by what each dancer is comfortable with.

-Awesome traditional tango music from the 1920s-1950s. We do not play Nuevo or Alternative music in classes, practicas, or milongas.

-Our classes will be fun and safe. We teach and enforce general tango etiquette. We reserve the right to eject students from the classes and practices if they are causing harm to anyone. This is for the safety and enjoyment of everyone. We also encourage everyone to speak up for their own comfort and safety.

-Everyone is welcome to dance any role they like. We welcome and encourage men as followers, women as leaders, non-binary dancers, and any combination in between. Tango is for everyone. It is 2019 after all!
